About the Volunteer Health category

This category is a Working Group focused on Volunteer Health. Whether we are talking physical, mental, psychological, or physiological health, the overall well-being of volunteers in our community is a significant factor in sustainability. So, let’s explore that!

Why should people use this category? What is it for?

Labor organizing! Open source volunteering! Grassroots/community organizing! Mental health! Self-care best practices! Sustainable (self-)preservation techniques! If any of these topics get you fired up in the context of open source sustainability, you are in the right place.

See other threads in the category to see what topics this group has covered.

Note some of these original topic ideas for this W.G. from Sustain Summit 2017 and 2018:

  • Project authors/maintainers responsibility (a.k.a Free the maintainer)
  • Resources for healing from burnout (mentorship networks, dedicated spaces)

How exactly is this different than the other categories we already have?

This category is mostly focused at the individual level. By this, we mean the individual people who volunteer or contribute their time to open source. In another way, this is the people-oriented Working Group.

Other Working Groups better focus on other organization and project sustainability topics.

What should topics in this category generally contain?

If you’re linking out to something else on the web, please add a sentence or two about why it was interesting or why you think it’s cool.

If you want to start a discussion or ask for help, please give background to the topic or your problem.
