Sustain Together - January Summary

Every other Friday, we host a call to document, share, and respond to current events in open source sustainability. Our next call is happening Friday Feb 10, TODAY at 17:00-18:00 UTC (12pm ET / 9am PT) - notes & connection details

Here’s a summary of our January calls:

January 13, 2023

We kicked off 2023 discussing a couple events coming up: Polish Tech Day is helping the startup community – can we steer them to utilize open source software? The Government Policies for Open Source Software sparked discussion on how Sustain could look at policies that are successful and encourage other governments to look at them.

Next, we dove into the Open Gaming License (OLG) leak of new terms. OGL is older than Creative Commons and many hobbyists will be affected with this change. We dove into some history and updates. Should we organize a Sustain online role-playing game :grimacing:?

January 27, 2023

In our second call for January, we started by discussing a suggestion from @gusaus on the Slack about WordPress adopting GitHub. Mostly, we agreed this was a good thing - it’s cool to see a once very bespoke ecosystem move to a more accessible and universal collaboration engine. This will also, hopefully, help source control in Wordpress, which hasn’t been excellent. Then we focused on Gitlab, which is aiming to get more contributors working on the GitLab platform itself (starkly different from GitHub’s process). One takeaway idea was a tool to automatically help developers who have contributed to large projects like this get more sponsors. More work would be needed.

@abitrolly brought up a reference to a company in the UK that was acquired and then stopped development on tools that were already in use in people’s eyes - another case of proprietary switches which isolates open source code, leaving lock-in. Not ideal - we hope that others come along to help those users. Speaking of communities, more talk was given then to the DnD commons license, and how that is affecting the gaming industry. We wish that @AnthonyRonda was on the call!

Finally, @coni2k pointed to the FOSS events website.
