Motion to cancel today’s 2022-01-11T16:00:00Z2022-01-11T17:00:00Z Sustain Design & UX WG as many folks that want to make it can’t and we’re looking for a new day/time.

I’ve also got a lot on and haven’t progressed with my actions from Decembers call.

Looks like the new winner for a timeslot for our WG meeting is:

Second Monday of the month at 17.00 GMT / 18.00 CET + WAT / 12.00 EST.

@RichardLitt @Memo_Es I’m not sure who ‘owns’ the calendar invite now but can y’all update? I’ll update the website text

Today we spoke about some strategical goals for the Sustain Design 7 UX Working group. Please find them in the notes for May 23rd 2022 here: SustainOSS UX & Design Working Group - Google Docs

Design & UX WG Strategy for the year

Let’s set some goals for Q2, Q3 and Q4 and then into 2023

Framings

  • Sustain 2022 event - what do we want to achieve there?

    • Sometime Sept or October - trying to combine with another OSS event - in person. More updates as they happen. Funders want OSD work to happen!
    • Making sure there are folks doing design work at the event
      • Definition of ‘doing design’ → OSS design + paid OSS design?
      • Travel stipends, geo diversity etc.
    • Designer Track
    • Invite all of the podcast guests to Sustain in person – +1
    • Workshops e.g. the only designer in your OSS, how to hire designers
    • We spoke about having a demonstrable design project. Funding? Hack day
      • Base of resources that work openly in design, contribution guideline resources to consume, iterate, open and mergeable!
      • Half day event + unstructured time post half-day balancing the introvert + extrovert time + extra day
      • Can we link this with OSD.net’s work on internships
      • Can connect with HRCD ‘solve my problem session’
      • Live podcast episode! Questions from the audience
      • Let folks at the event know they can join and participate
      • All sustainers at an event - OSCAfrica + OSCIndia
        • Environment and culture of OSS
      • Instructional zines for OSS done by designer
      • Might be able to co-host something with OSD, e.g. an OSD Day post-Sustain
  • What do we want to ask the Sustain org committee for funding/support with?

  • Strategy for the podcast?

    • Ask all the guests to come together and talk about OSD + the OSD.net community
    • Interview each of ourselves!
    • Have we done a review of location representations from who’s been on so far? Where are we missing geographically?
  • Strategy for the Inventory?

    • Tie into the sustain event as a project etc.
  • Strategy for community calls

    • How are we holding space? Are we doing it well? What do the practitioners spend time on
      • GA: Reflecting on how we’ve done this in other contexts… “clinic time” or “help me solve my problem” time could be a mode of the community call OR even a podcast episode mode, e.g. “questions from the community” or “dear [abbey]” type of thing
    • How are we really connecting with OSD.net and their goals?

What questions do we talk about and answer?

  • OSPO’s + design?
  • Is there a difference between designers that don’t get paid for OSS contributions and designers who do it as a paid role? If yes what? If not, why? If yes, maybe explain?
  • What does it mean to contribute design to OSS?
  • What is the OSS community to designers?
  • What is design’s role in less UI based OSS e.g. scientific OSS command line
    • Mars is asked ‘What does the designer do?’
    • Zines, ikea instruction books, wizard zines, grok ?, cool comic!: Camp_Quansight_2022_Alt_Text_Zine_Mars_Lee.pdf - Google Drive
    • Theming our calls. Adding intentionality and opening opportunities for intersectional conversations.
    • Enhanced project management to avoid floating conversations.
      • Pay someone? Long-term
      • Low-teching it and just tracking our conversations month to month? Short-term
      • Tina can do scheduling and other work but would need direction
      • Richard (tapped out time wise)

Life cycle of the knowledge base website/repo project/Inventory

Let’s understand the maintenance effort here and see whether we can ask OC for funding to maintain and develop it?

Hi all! I missed last week’s call- came an hour late, oops! Thankfully Eriol was kind enough to talk to me about SustainOSS. For context, I came here because I’ve been in recent OSD calls.

What is design’s role in less UI based OSS e.g. scientific OSS command line?

  • This is a question I’ve been asking designers, developers and data scientists
  • Some suggestions include
    • Documentation, especially to explain to newcomers or convince people to contribute
      • ‘How to find yourself in the code’ for NumPy (a computational Python library)
    • Marketing of OSS projects
      • Illustrated newsletter: updates and community news about NumPy in 2022
      • Promotional material at conferences

Some cool design work I’ve done is… comics! Specifically ‘Alt Text for Scientific Diagrams and Documentation’.

This started because writing alt text for histograms, bar charts, etc requires different guidelines than general images. eg “A cow wearing a blue cap” vs “A normalized histogram with 50 bins and variance… on the X axis… on the Y axis…”

As a designer, I can’t help but make illustrations to explain these concepts. Eventually, at our in-person company retreat, I distributed printed zines!

Here is a digital version: Camp_Quansight_2022_Alt_Text_Zine_Mars_Lee.pdf - Google Drive

Preview page:

Comics are one way designers could contribute to OSS. It’s a little unusual, but reception had been great! People said they’re were very engaging. A lot of developers are into comics so geek culture has been a great way to connect.

Comics/zines already have some presence: wizardzines, Bubblesort Zines, Grokking Algorithms, Erika Heidi.

Physical media, such as zines, has also been great in getting developer buy-in. Not always possible, but certainly makes a splash.

Looking forward to the next call- got the time right this time!

This is great! Fun stuff, and it does remind me of WizardZines.

It would be excellent for projects to include asks in their Contributing.md files for graphic comic artists for hard topics that their community struggles with.

We have our Sustain Design & UX meeting today - are we all good for attending?

Time: 2022-06-13T16:00:00Z2022-06-13T17:00:00Z

Notes doc: SustainOSS UX & Design Working Group - Google Docs

Meeting room jitsi: Jitsi Meet

We have themes added but need more: https://www.figma.com/file/DsvDgbxP9eJi6XcyxktbJ2/Themes-for-Sustain-Design-%26-UX-OSS?node-id=0%3A1

We can spend this meeting time understanding how best to facilitate these themes?

I can add something to the bottom of the agenda, if anyone’s interested.

Adding on to my topic last meeting but with a focus on sustainability

  • My experience providing for both open source and a company, but needing financial backing of a company
    • Providing quantified value for a company instead of an open source (solid metric internal company goal vs more nebulous community)
    • I’m a technical illustrator in an company focused on open source
    • Majority of hour allocation to OSS: eg. 30 hours open source design, 10 hour internal design a week
  • A flyer I recently made for an upcoming open source conference, SciPy 2022
    • SciPy is focused on data science tools (computational mathematics, geology, astrology, data visualization, etc)
  • Worked with Marketing team
    • Design poster and also write copy focused on community, listing specific OSS projects that receive non-code and design contributions
    • Provide insider view to company’s Marketing team, whose experience in tech sales but not open source

One thing that struck me - could we set up a mindmap for the UX working group, to talk about how design works in OSS, and what kind of peopel there are? Mind be a useful exercise for writing out some of the more complex issues.

See ospology/ospo-mindmap at main · todogroup/ospology · GitHub for an example of an open source mindmap in use.

looks interesting but another thing to maintain? also i was thinking on our discussion from yesterday and how we try to balance between OSS friendly spaces and tools and design friendly spaces and tools and I think our figjam board is also a good space for this

Next Sustain Design & UX working group meeting is August the 8th 2022-08-08T16:00:00Z2022-08-08T17:00:00Z

Notes doc is here: SustainOSS UX & Design Working Group - Google Docs

We’ll go back over proposals for Sustain Design & UX WG’s request ahead of the SustainOSS Summit 2023 and catch up about the podcast.

Discussion topic is: How might we create interview guidelines for open source projects and softwares.

Please add topics for discussion in the Figjam board and vote using stamps on topics you like. We have discussion topics set until January 2023 now.
