Research Project into Motivation in Open Source

Hi Sustainers,

I am excited to share that the research team around Igor Steinmacher is conducting a survey to understand today’s motivation of contributors to open source projects.

Academic research into the motivation of open source contributors was big about 15-20 years ago, when everyone was scratching their head why people were volunteering their time. As we discussed during the Sustain Summit, this reality is long gone. This means that we need to update our understanding of what motivates people to contribute to open source.

I usually don’t like to share surveys and ask for participants, but this is an important topic for academics because we are still working with outdated understanding of open source and a lot has changed in the last 10 years alone.

My ask to you:

  1. Please take the survey yourself.
  2. If you agree it’s important, please share this with other people you know.

The survey is fairly short and to the point. I took it myself
